Meditating with prayer beads

You don't need a bracelet to meditate. But if you already have one, it gives your hands something to do while your mind settles — which for a lot of people is easier than sitting with nothing at all.

Is meditation the same as mindfulness?

Not quite. Mindfulness is a way of paying attention — noticing what's happening right now, without judging it. Meditation is a dedicated practice you sit down to do, and mindfulness is one of several techniques used during it. You can be mindful while doing almost anything; meditation usually means setting aside time specifically for the practice.

How do you meditate without a formal setup?

Sit somewhere you won't be interrupted for a few minutes — a chair, the floor, even a parked car works. Close your eyes or soften your gaze, and bring your attention to your breath. If you're holding a bracelet, let each bead mark one breath; when your mind wanders, and it will, just come back to the next bead. A few minutes is enough to start.

Is meditation the same as prayer?

They overlap but aren't identical. Prayer is usually directed — words or thoughts addressed to something beyond yourself. Meditation is more often about observing your own mind without directing it anywhere in particular. Many traditions use both together, and plenty of people who meditate don't pray, or the reverse.
